Technical skills development
Camera:
We were tasked with creating a short film to test our camera knowledge, we set up a scenario and then tried to work off that.I was an actor during the filming process, so I was listening to the director and following what he was asking me to do although I also did a small bit of filming helping to adjust focal length.
Due to a lack of time that we had to film the result in my opinion is poor with plenty of continuity errors although all the shots were in focus.
I already had a good understanding of using the camera, so the lesson helped to enforce my prior knowledge and was helpful to people less experienced with cameras.
We had to record a short piece of a script experimenting with the best place to put the boom mic, so the sound is crisp and clean, we also did record outside so that we could use the pop filter. I mainly did the recording as I wasn’t very confident although the lesson helped teach me how to set up the microphone and start recording. The product came out okay but with some more practise I feel like I could get much nicer audio files. I learnt how to set up and adjust the settings on the microphone and where to put the microphone in order to get best sound.
Lighting:
We were tasked in the studio to experiment with lighting using gel covers and adjusting height and intensity, this was fun and tedious as moving one light would open a shadow somewhere else, so you had to take your time and really look at what’s happening.
I was listening to Ellie and adjusting the lights as she asked in order to obtain the best shots. The photos came out well, with some nice photos that told a story and it showed me that you can use colourful gels in film and get a natural effect.
I learnt that you can’t get lighting wrong as it is a constant experiment trying to find what looks most suitable for the tone of the film.
